Wedding Music: Top 3 First Dance Myths

Learn the fine points of first dance song selection and the reality about some of the most common stereotypes.

Myth #1: Your first dance should be a slow song.

Your first dance is all about you and your now-husband. So pick a song that represents your feelings for each other. Don’t base your song off of the tempo- especially if you are hiring a band! “A band can easily turn a quick tempo song into a slower song- of course, if that is what you want,” says Nicole Tegge, Wedding Music guru and Managing Director of LOVE Entertainment. Or dance to the beat of your own drummer and pick (and keep) a quick tempo first dance! It’s sure to pleasantly surprise your guests!

Our favorite faster paced first dance song: “You Are the Best Thing”- Ray LaMontagne

Myth #2: You can only pick one song for your first dance.

Having one first dance song is becoming a thing of the past. A lot of couples are opting to pick two+ songs for their first dance- with one song fading into the next. Think of this like your own personal mix-tape of your relationship! What’s even better- if you both want different songs for your first dance, you no longer need to compromise!

Our favorite two for one combination: “All I Want Is You”- U2 with “Is This Love”- Bob Marley

Myth #3: Your first dance should be just like the recording.

With the wonderful creation of Youtube came an abundance of cover songs- other people’s interpretations and performances of already well established music. And a lot of couples are heading to Youtube for a unique spin on their first dance. “We’ve seen everything from acoustic versions of Led Zeppelin to combinations of several different recordings by the Beatles to reggae versions of American Authors” said Nicole Tegge. Weddings are very personalized events so why shouldn’t you make your first dance as unique as you?!

Our favorite off-beat version: “Thank You”- Led Zeppelin (acoustic cover) or “At Last”- Etta James (reggae cover)
